There may be as many as 450,000 people in Britain that have a problem with gambling. A natural high is created from the anticipation and excitement which can be addictive. There are so many betting shops on the high streets and people are able to gamble much more now because of the internet. This enables them to gamble from their own homes or on phones, women gamblers are increasing in numbers and this could be one of the reasons.

Depression is high among those who have difficulties with their gambling and there is also the risk of prison through theft and fraud. Homes are lost, debts mount up and family life suffers. Gambling can successfully be treated in the same way as other addictions as it is a drug that the body itself makes.

Sex addiction is any sexual activity that feels out of control, this could involve sex with a partner, but it may also involve pornography, visiting prostitutes or using chat lines. These activities can become a problem if the urges become out of control. As with gambling this addiction can also be treated in the same way as substance and alcohol addictions as it is caused by powerful chemicals which are released during sex. Similarly to the recovery process for other addictions sex addiction involves identifying and changing behaviour.

Internet - Porn, spending, gambling, relationships and gaming

It is true that there are many positives of the internet, but there are also negatives such as people suffering from the effects of compulsive gambling, pornography, spending and gaming. There is also the added factor that these are all available 24 hours a day.

Using the internet excessively can undoubtedly be a great way of avoiding reality but unfortunately this has negative repercussions on life, work, health and relationships. It can be tempting to be anonymous, change identity and focus on activities online such as gambling, gaming, relationships and porn but this can lead to neglecting real life relationships, work and well-being. Debt too can become a problem. In moderation these behaviours are ok but when they become obsessive and affect your life there is a problem. These activities can lead to stress, anxiety and depression.
